IMPOSTER SCAM: caller claims to be from property assessor’s office…but it’s fake

HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WDEF) – The Hamilton County Property Assessor wants residents to be aware of an imposter scam.

A few residents have received phone calls from someone claiming to be with their agency, but they’re actually not.

The imposter calls from an 833 area code phone number.

They call about a summons to court and ask for a social security number and/or banking information.

However, Assessor Marty Haynes said that they do not ask for personal information and they don’t even have the legal authority to summon someone to court.

“It is frustrating especially with folks here at the holidays and folks are busy and, you know, you get an unusual phone call like this from an office that you don’t often talk to on a regular basis. So yeah it is unnerving for us,” Haynes said.

Local law enforcement agencies said that if you get one of these calls contact the property assessor’s office and let them know, (423) 209-7300.

You should also file a complaint to the FTC.

If you believe you may have fallen victim to the scam, contact law enforcement.
