Infant critically injured in East Ridge Mother’s Day crash passes away

EAST RIDGE, Tenn. (WDEF)- An infant who was critically injured in a crash on I-75 in East Ridge on Mother’s day has passed away from his injuries., East Ridge police confirmed.

22 month old Sawyer Smith was in his family’s Jeep when police say it was struck by a semi truck driven by Joseph Antoinier.

The Higgins Funeral Homes confirms in an obituary that he passed away on Sunday a week after the crash.

His father, Lane Smith, died on the scene of the crash, along with 61 year old David Huggins.

The Smith family is from in Fayetteville, Tennessee north of Huntsville in Middle Tennessee.

His mother and sister were also injured in the crash.

On a GoFundMe to raise hospital and funeral funds for the family, the fundraiser’s organizer Kayla Reese wrote that Sawyer passed away on May 18 and that, “He has gained his angel wings and is now in Heaven playing with Jesus and his daddy.”

Antoinier was was facing two counts of reckless homicide prior to Sawyer’s death, but an additional count is now likely to be added.

He is due in East Ridge Criminal Court in August as he has bonded out of jail.
