Why does insulin cost so much?
CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – A new study found that the cost in Insulin has almost doubled over the last five years.
So we asked a local pharmacist why that happens.
Many patients are having to pay hundreds of dollars for the medication, and that’s just for a single vial.
Pharmacists say simple supply and demand could be part of the blame for the rising costs.
They also say people’s lives depend on insulin, so drug companies know they’ll pay regardless of how high prices get.
Pharmacist Jordan Morrison “Drug companies are going to get their money and when your life depends on it you’ll pay it. You can’t choose to not use insulin when your blood glucose is 500 and they know that and you will pay when you have to have it to live.”
Morrison also says he sees the cost of insulin continuing to increase, but to talk with your pharmacist about finding the least expensive option for you.
