Investigation underway in Dalton officer involved shooting

DALTON, Ga. (WDEF) — An investigation is underway after a suspect was injured in an officer involved shooting in Dalton.

It happened on Monday at 9 a.m. on Abutment Road, in front of a business called Sonoco.

According to investigators, Dalton Police responded to multiple calls about a man who was running in and out of traffic and acting erratic.

GBI identified the man as David Schmitt, 32.

When Dalton Police arrived, there was an altercation. According to GBI, Schmitt physically attacked the officer. He was then tased. Investigators say Schmitt then got a hold of the taser and tried to tase the officer. They say police tried to separate themselves from the man, but he continued to charge at the officer. The police officer then fired shots at Schmitt. He was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The officer received minor injuries from the incident.
