IRONMAN 70.3 coming to Chattanooga

The Scenic City has landed another IRONMAN competition.

Steve Meckfessel, IRONMAN Global Race Operations said, "Super pleased and super excited to announce that Chattanooga has been selected as the 26th U.S. city to host an IRONMAN 70.3 race in 2015." IRONMAN 70.3 is similar to its big brother IRONMAN that was held in Chattanooga six weeks ago. Meckfessel said, "What this announcement today does is really anchor Chattanooga as the epicenter of triathlon in the southeast United States."

Athletes will go through a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike ride and a 13.1 mile run on nearly the same course as last September’s competition. Meckfessel said, "We signed a 4 year commitment for bringing that race here in May for the next again 4 years. That contract coincides with IRONMAN contract that we have with the Chattanooga Sports committee." One more contract was signed and unveiled at Wednesday afternoon’s announcement. And that was the title sponsorship to Sunbelt Bakery. Chris McKee, McKee Foods Sales Vice President said, "We are very excited to support an event which will further enhance the reputation of Chattanooga as an outdoor destination."

Chattanooga Convention Center and Visitor’s Bureau officials expect an additional six thousand people will travel to the Scenic City for the upcoming event with an estimated economic impact of 3 to 4 million dollars. Mayor Andy Berke, City of Chattanoga said, "This is one more reason why we are building the greatest mid size city in America."

Officials say registration for IRONMAN 70.3 begins November 18th. The race happens on May 17th, 2015.
