It’s Official. Brantley Gilbert to Headline Heroes’ Benefit Concert

Chattanooga, TN (WDEF) – Chattanooga has been abuzz with rumors for weeks now about an upcoming concert to benefit the families of the fallen heroes.

And Monday, officials released details about the event.

Wednesday, September 16th, two months to the day from the tragic shootings, Chattanooga Unite: A Tribute on the River will take place.

The idea took shape by a hit country singer who was so moved by the tragedies of July 16th that he had the idea to host a concert in Chattanooga to benefit the families and the community.

"You know, right off the bat we knew we wanted to do something," said national recording artist and country singer Brantley Gilbert. "And we didn’t know what yet. We started small. The more we thought about it we just thought the communities and the families needed a little but more of a grand gesture so we pulled together all our folks and started making calls."

Chattanooga’s own Samuel L. Jackson will emcee the concert.

Of course with big names performing on the Coke Stage at Ross’s Landing, one may ask who is paying for all of this.

Well, officials are proud to say all labor including moving the barge, lighting, construction, even the fireworks show… everyone is working for free.

"Everyone has offered to do it free," Said Chip Baker who works with Friends of the Festival. "All the proceeds will go to the families. And that’s huge. That says so much about our community and frankly it’s very humbling. But also very cool at the same time. What a great community."

And entrance to the concert is free.

"The concert is free but we are just like in church, we’re going to pass the pales instead of the offering plate," said U.S. Navy Captain Dan Barks who also works with Friends of the Festival.

All money collected is going to the families of the fallen heroes.

Gilbert promises an exciting show he says may get loud and rowdy at times…but he really wants the concert to celebrate these heroes lives.

"I hope they know they’re in my prayers and they have my deepest condolences," said Gilbert. "I know for a fact I can’t bring their sons and brothers and friends back but hopefully we can shine a little light on their legacy and give them one hell of an amen."
