Ivy Academy Students Win Charter Champion Award for Solar-Powered Backpack Project

SODDY DAISY, Tenn. (WDEF) — Students at Ivy Academy have earned national recognition by receiving the Charter Champion Award for Community Impact Project of the Year, thanks to their groundbreaking innovation — solar-powered backpacks.

These student-designed backpacks are equipped with solar panels that can charge electronic devices like phones and tablets. While the invention itself is impressive, the mission behind it is even more powerful. The backpacks are being sent to support teachers and students in Ukraine, where power outages have disrupted classrooms. Closer to home, the packs also provide a clean energy source for outdoor learning opportunities at Ivy Academy.

One student shared their excitement about the project:

“I enjoy seeing all the hard work and what we will be able to provide and bring to the table. We have a lot of opportunities that have come out of this, but my favorite is definitely seeing everyone enjoy it — and it being in need. It’s not just a portable power source; it’s going to help people and change lives.”

The award highlights not only the students’ creativity and technical skill, but also their commitment to global citizenship and environmental responsibility. This project stands as a shining example of how innovation and compassion can work hand in hand to make a real difference.

Congratulations to the students of Ivy Academy!
