JOYNER NAMED COLLEGE SPORTS MADNESS MID-MAJOR NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

(GOMOCS.COM) CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior Jasmine Joyner (Southaven, Miss.) was named Mid-Major and Southern Conference Player of the Week for all games played January 2-8 by College Sports Madness.

 

Joyner averaged a double-double with 22 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. She has nine blocked shots in two games and moved up to 18th on the NCAA all-time list. She shot 68 percent for the week and 90 percent from the free throw line while sinking her one attempt from beyond the arc.

 

She had five assists last week against just two miscues and avoided foul trouble, getting whistled late in the game Saturday at Mercer for her only violation.

 

In the Mocs’ Southern Conference season-opener at Samford, Joyner had 20 points and nine rebounds, just missing a double-double. She shot 58.3 percent for the game, making 7-of-12 and was 6-of-7 from the free throw line while recording five blocked shots.

 

Joyner came on strong again Saturday in Chattanooga’s matchup at Mercer. She was 10-of-13 from the floor for an impressive 76.9 field goal percentage. With 12 rebounds, she recorded her fifth double-double of the year and the 24th of her career. Joyner had four assists in the win with no turnovers and added four more blocked shots to her nation’s-leading total.

 

Joyner leads the nation in total blocked shots with 63 and is ranked third for blocks per game at 3.9. She is 22nd all-time for the Mocs in scoring with 1,105 points and her 798 total rebounds ranks ninth on UTC’s career charts.

 

The Mocs will host rival ETSU Saturday, January 14 in its home SoCon opener. The game is set to tip off at 2 p.m. Follow all the action at GoMocs.com.
