‘Laken Riley Act’ passes House, heads to Senate
WASHINGTON (WDEF) — House lawmakers passed the “Laken Riley Act” on Thursday, which gives state governments the tools to hold illegal immigrants accountable for crimes.
House Bill 7511 passed 251-170, with all Republicans and 37 Democrats voting for the bill.
It requires Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to take custody of illegal aliens who have committed theft-related crimes.
This bill will also allow State Attorneys General to sue the Secretary of Homeland Security for policy failures that harm citizens.
It comes after a student jogging on the University of Georgia campus was murdered by a man who had entered the U.S. illegally. Jose Ibarra faces multiple murder and assault charges in the death of Laken Riley.
The Laken Riley Act has passed the House, and it now heads to the Senate.
Legislation states that it “honors the life and memory of Laken Riley and other victims of the Biden administration’s open borders policies.” It also denounces President Biden’s open border policies.
