Lee Lady Flames Currently Sit Tied Atop the Gulf South Conference Standings
Cleveland, TN-(WDEF-TV) The Lee women’s basketball team notched their first ever win in the NCAA tournament last year, and they appear to be on a bigger mission this season.
Right now the Lady Flames are tied for first in the Gulf South Conference, and they’re ranked 24th in the nation.
Lee coach Marty Rowe love what he saw from his team early on.
The division two Lady Flames barely lost to division one UTC 61-55 in an exhibition game for Lee.
Said guard Abby Bertram:”That game really set our tone for the season. We really figured out what our offense was supposed to be doing and gave us a lot of confidence.”
Said Rowe:”We learned so much about ourselves. So with this team, that’s what that game paid off for us because we were able to grow a lot after that game.”
It appears the Lady Flames really grew up at the start of January.
They upset number one ranked Union 56-51 on the road.
Said Rowe:”We could tell early on the day before. We could tell in shoot-around. We could tell that we had an extra edge about us.”
Said guard Haley Schubert:”Yeah I really think that just opened our eyes to see how really good we are. That really just showed us that we can go farther than we thought.”
Said Rowe:”Defensively we were really good. That’s a team that was averaging at the time 86 points a game, and we held them to 51.”
Lee is currently sixth in the nation in scoring defense allowing 52-points a game.
And one of their best defenders is true freshman guard Haley Schubert, who has been named the Gulf South Conference freshman of the week five times this year.
Reporter:”What’s up with you winning the freshman of the week award every week?”
Laughs Schubert:”Good question. I don’t even know because. Yeah. I don’t know. I think I’ve been doing pretty good as a freshman, but yeah.”
Said Bertram:”I think people really under estimate her. She’s really quick with the ball.”
Said Rowe:”If you line everybody up to start the game, that’s not the kid you pick. She’s got something. She’s got that ‘it’ factor.”
