Local Boy Begins Campaign to Send Cards of Love to Charleston

A 10-year-old boy from Harrison was so moved by the recent events in Charleston, he thought of a campaign on his own to get the folks in Chattanooga to reach out and offer their support and love.

This Thursday night, you can be a part of it.

"I think forgiveness is important because when you give forgiveness, you receive forgiveness in return," said 10-year-old Mason Lowe.

Mason is speaking on why forgiveness is important in light of the Charleston killings last week.

In a video going viral on the internet, the families of the victims confront killer Dylan Roof during his bond hearing, telling him over and over again, they forgive him, an aspect that is setting this heinous killing apart from many others in our nation.

"If anyone saw that video with the killer and the victims’ families, we look at that and say if they can forgive him, who are we? Why can’t we?" said Donna Lowe, mother to Mason and along with her husband Marty, run Main Street Innovations, a human resources management firm in Chattanooga.

So Mason came up with an idea and with the help of his enterprising parents who run Main Street Innovations, the idea…has turned into a campaign.

"Through conversations, we said, ‘hey, what do you want to do?’ and Mason said he would love to send stuffed animals and I just started thinking about the postage and all that and we said what else can we do and Mason said what about cards?"

Thursday night, June 25th at the Camp House on Martin Luther King Boulevard, Mason Lowe, Main Street Innovations  and the City of Chattanooga is hosting Chattanooga Speaks 4 Charleston,"A card campaign of love from one city to the other"

"That night from 6 to 7, come and create your card with citizens. From 7 to 8 will be a candlelight vigil and at 8 o’clock we’re all going to head over to the Bessie Smith lawn," said Lowe. "We’re going to walk across the street, form a circle of unity and we’re going to end there."

Lowe has been in contact with the AME church in Charleston who told her the cards are gifts they will treasure today…. and for a long time to come.

"Charleston will feel loved when they receive the cards from us," said Mason.

"So I actually think that Chattanooga is going to receive alot more from this than Charleston," said Lowe.

Main Street Innovations will be collecting cards until July 1st when they will mail them to the AME church in Charleston on July 2nd.

Details of the event are found on the Facebook page for Main Street Innovations.
