Local Reactions to Pope Francis’ Passing

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – Catholics around the world are mourning Pope Francis, who has died at the age of 88, weeks after being released from the hospital following a battle with double pneumonia and other health complications.

Known for his humble approach, Francis was the first pope from the Americas and the first Jesuit to lead the Catholic Church.

His papacy was marked by a deep commitment to social justice, interfaith dialogue, and reforming the Vatican. Pope Francis took bold steps to address issues like sexual abuse within the Church, while also calling for action on climate change and advocating for the poor and marginalized.

His efforts to bridge divides both within the Church and globally made him one of the most influential spiritual leaders of the modern era.

In his final years, Pope Francis continued to inspire millions, often emphasizing peace, mercy, and the need for greater unity among people of all faiths.

He passed away peacefully at the Vatican, leaving behind a legacy that will shape the Catholic Church for generations to come.

The Vatican has announced that funeral arrangements will be shared in the coming days.
