Local woman drowns in Colorado River

Sheetal Patel was cooling off after a hike into the Grand Canyon

(GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Arizona (WDEF) – A Chattanooga woman drowned over the weekend in the Grand Canyon.

Park officials say 47- year old Sheetal Patel hiking into the canyon on Saturday afternoon to meet a commercial boating trip.

They say she stopped at a beech along the Colorado River to cool off, but fell in.

The swift current carried her away.

Commercial guides got to her by boat and tried to revive her.

Patel was flown to a hospital on a park helicopter, but was pronounced dead, there.

The park is investigating the case.
