Looking Ahead to March 16, 2015

The Alabama Senate votes to do away with state-issued marriage licenses following the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that effectively legalized same-sex marriage. The bill would require couples to file a form recording their marriage, rather than have county probate offices issue licenses. Lawmakers say the change would end controversy over marriage licenses, while ensuring people can marry whomever they choose.

A bill stripping the University of Tennessee’s controversial Office of Diversity and Inclusion of some – but not all – of its state funding has passed a House subcommittee. An amendment tacked on to the bill on Tuesday would also ban state funds from being used to promote the university’s Sex Week, the use of gender-neutral pronouns on campus and the promotion or demotion of any religion.

A proposal to require transgender students to use bathrooms that match their sex at birth is gaining momentum in the Tennessee legislature after passing in a House subcommittee. That bill is advancing despite opposition from Republican governor, Bill Haslam.
