Lookout Mountain fire one of many in North Georgia

DADE COUNTY, Ga. (WDEF) – According to the Georgia Forestry Commission, 23 new fires began on Friday and 4 more Saturday morning.

Fire officials say that active fires are being spotted about a quarter mile ahead of the main fires as wind and dry conditions are driving the spread.

The Georgia Forestry Commission also says 100% of ground material is igniting due to the dry conditions, and fires from weeks ago are smoldering again.

The Lookout Mountain Fire is one of the fires active again. Georgia Forestry says that fire is roughly 175 acres as of early Saturday afternoon.

Georgia Forestry is working with Dade County Firefighters. Officials say the hang-gliding vista has been closed on Lookout Mountain, and Georgia Highway 189/Scenic Highway is closed from Burkhalter Gap South to the cell tower.

According to Georgia Forestry, no evacuation orders have been issued, but area residents have been notified of the fire activity. Georgia Forestry officials say 9 houses are being secured in the event the fire moves closer to them.

The Fox Mountain Fire and the Brow Road fires continue to burn, but Georgia Forestry says those fires are contained within the fire breaks.

Crews are working to maintain fire breaks using various resources including aircraft.
