Lookouts Kennys Vargas Named Southern League Player of the Week

MARIETTA, GA – The Southern League of Professional Baseball Clubs announces its Pitcher and Player of the Week for August 3 through 9.  Lefthander Cody Reed of the Pensacola Blue Wahoos was selected as the Pitcher of the Week while Chattanooga Lookouts firstbaseman and designated hitter Kennys Vargas earned Player of the Week honors.

Lookouts first baseman and DH Kennys Vargas had a monster week at the plate, either leading or tied for the league lead with six extra-base hits, 24 total bases, two triples, three homeruns, 10 RBI, a 1.043 slugging percentage and OPS of 1.592. Furthermore, he posted top five numbers with a .435 batting average, seven walks and an on-base percentage of .548. In seven games last week, the slugger from Canovanas, Puerto Rico went 10-for-23 at the plate, while recording at least two RBI in four of those outings. His most impressive string of performances came in a pair of contests at Jackson, Tennessee on August 4 and 6, in which he went 4-for-8 with a walk, four runs, a triple, two homeruns and six RBI. This is the first career weekly award for the 2014 Futures Games selectee.
