Major renovations coming for the Wilcox Tunnel

Chattanooga, TN (WDEF) – Starting Monday, August 17th, the Wilcox Tunnel will be closed for some major renovations.

That’s according to Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke’s Office.

A press release says the tunnel will be closed through the end of next February.

More than $2 million in capital funds has been allocated to the project by the Berke Administration.

The renovations include safety improvements, major lighting upgrades, and a new inner tunnel liner to halt water seepage into the tunnel.

This is the tunnel’s first major renovation in decades.

Since the tunnel will be closed for 6 months, detours signs will be posted, and Chattanooga Department of Transportation created a detour plan to help with rerouting and safety.

CDOT says Northbound travelers should expect an additional 10 minutes in their route; Southbound an extra 15 minutes.
