Man who died in Hamilton County Jail custody identified
UPDATE:
HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WDEF) — The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office has identified the person who died in-custody last week.
Deward Burton Johnson died on Thursday, March 14.
The HCSO said he passed away after experiencing a medical emergency in a holding cell, while awaiting release.
He died at a local medical facility.
The sheriff’s office has not released any more information at this time.

HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WDEF) — Hamilton County Jail corrections deputies found a man unconscious in a jail cell on Thursday. A medical facility later pronounced him dead.
The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office said corrections personnel found the unconscious man “experiencing a medical emergency” at 8:30 p.m. The man was in a holding cell, waiting for the release process to be completed.
Corrections deputies and healthcare professionals immediately began rendering aid to the man. They then took him to a local medical facility, where he was pronounced dead.
He had been in HCSO custody for about 14 hours, the sheriff’s office stated. A bondsman brought him in at 6:30 a.m. that morning for an active burglary warrant.
Authorities have not identified the man yet.
However, District Attorney Coty Wamp has directed the HCSO to investigate his death.
