McCallie Basketball Coach John Shulman Resigns After Four Seasons

(McCallie release) After serving for four successful seasons as the varsity basketball coach at McCallie School, John Shulman has decided to step away from coaching to pursue other
opportunities in basketball and spend more time with family. Shulman will not be
taking another coaching position, but he will look for new challenges and opportunities
in athletics.
“John’s dedication to success has transformed the basketball program at McCallie,”
Headmaster Lee Burns ‘87 said. “Under his leadership, the team has had phenomenal
success on the court, but just as importantly the boys have learned skills that will help
them be good and productive men for the rest of their lives.
“We will greatly miss John’s leadership on and off the court, and we wish him great
success in the next phase of his career.”
During his time at McCallie, Shulman compiled an overall record of 100-32 with an
appearance in the TSSAA Division II-AA state championship game, the state semifinals
and numerous championship victories in basketball tournaments across the South.
The Blue Tornado basketball team has been ranked as the top basketball team in the
state, and several of his players have been recruited to play basketball in college
— including his oldest son Max Shulman ‘17, who is completing his freshman season at
the University of Alabama at Huntsville. Shulman and his wife, Amy, have two other
sons currently attending McCallie — junior Tanner and sixth-grader J.C.
“Coaching at McCallie and being a part of this community has been an amazing
experience for my entire family,” Shulman said. “The boys I have coached have been
amazing to work with, and the school prepares them to be men of excellence in whatever
they do. I have sent my three boys to McCallie, so Amy and I know first hand about what
an amazing place McCallie is. While I feel it is time for me to look for other challenges in
my career and focus on other priorities in my life, my dedication to McCallie will
continue.”
McCallie will begin a national search for a coach to succeed Shulman for the 2018-19
season and build upon the success and solid foundation established over the last four
years.
“McCallie is an outstanding school and is poised for continued success in varsity
basketball,” Assistant Headmaster Kenny Sholl said. “We have outstanding facilities,
and our students bring a passion to everything they do in all aspects of school life. We
anticipate many highly qualified candidates will be interested in this position.
“Coach Shulman has been an outstanding leader for our basketball program and our
school. His work on behalf of McCallie is a testament to his character, knowledge and
drive, and it is reflected in the development of the young men he had worked with
during his time here. We will miss his influence greatly.”
“John brought energy, expertise and knowledge to our basketball program,” McCallie
Dean of Athletics Jeff Romero said. “We are grateful for the work he has done, not only
for basketball, but for the boys of the school as well. It will be difficult to fill his shoes,
but we will get to work to find the right fit for McCallie.”
