McCallie Bringing Powerhouse Oak Hill Academy to Chattanooga in Dr Pepper 10 Classic
Chattanooga-(WDEF) A familiar tournament is returning to the Chattanooga basketball scene, but on a different stage.
McCallie has basically renewed the Dr Pepper Classic, which the Chattanooga Mocs used to host for a number of years.
The tournament will feature four high school teams, including one of the premier teams in the country in Oak Hill Academy.
McCallie coach John Shulman used to coach in the Dr Pepper Classic when he was at UTC, and now he’s ready to resurrect the tournament on the high school level with a super strong field.
"That was eleven years that we dealt with the Dr Pepper Classic and dealt with Gary Davis at that time and dealing with Darren now. These are my close, dear friends. So to keep this going for them and for what they are doing for us, I’m very appreciative."
Said Central Purple Pounders coach Rick Rogers,"It’s probably the largest event that’s ever happened in high school basketball history here in Chattanooga that I know of."
The McCallie Dr Pepper 10 Classic will be a two day tournament starting on February 5th, featuring McCallie, Central, Hamilton Heights, and national power-house Oak Hill Academy, who went 47-1 this year. The school has also produced 25 NBA players.
Said Shulman,"Now we get to play the best at McCallie. That’s a pretty neat opportunity."
Zach Ferrell’s Hamilton Heights team has already played Oak Hill a couple of times.
"I don’t think that people will realize how good and how talented they are. One thing with Oak Hill, it’s almost I guess like playing Kentucky, your kids know they are going to have to bring it."
Rick Rogers feels blessed to be apart of the tournament.
"Even if we don’t walk away with a win, we’re going to walk away with a lot of great experience and game experience going into the post-season."
