McCallie Hoping to Finish Strong in 2015
Chattanooga-(WDEF) ‘Finish strong’ has been a popular theme for football teams over the years.
But it’s more than just an anthem for McCallie this season, after the way their season ended in 2014.
McCallie had it rolling last year blasting out to a 7-0 start, including a 62-34 whipping of powerhouse Ensworth and a win over rival Baylor. But then the Blue Tornado went 2-3 the rest of the season.
Said head coach Ralph Potter,"We played during the middle part of the season as well as any team I’ve ever had play. At one point we were ranked 18th in the country by Max Preps. I think our guys were so focused on that Baylor game. We hadn’t won it in so long. The game was here at Spears Stadium. Our guys were just so focused on that, so once it was over, I really feel like they felt like they had accomplished their main goal."
This season, McCallie will have to replace running back Alex Trotter, who set a school rushing record last year with over 22-hundreds.
Said quarterback JaVaughn Craig,"I feel very strong about our running backs. Got a lot of power and a lot of speed. I think our perimeter is a little bit stronger than last year. We have a lot more depth than we did last year, so I feel really good about where we are."
But McCallie will return one dynamo in the backfield in quarterback JaVaughn Craig, who 24-7 Sports lists as the nation’s 39th best dual-threat quarterback.
"I have a lot of confidence being my third year in the system. I feel very confident with the play-book. I also have a lot of confidence in the team."
In the trenches, Coach Potter says the Blue Tornado will once again be kind of scrappy.
Said Potter,"We run an offense with those little bitty guys on the offensive line that are really tough, hard-nosed, and smart. So those kind of guys can win for us."
