Meet “Do the Right Thing” September winner: Claudette Andrews
Chattanooga, TN (WDEF) – Salvation Army volunteer Claudette Andrews was left speechless by her win.
When WDEF News12 and Integrity Automotive presented her with the $500 cash prize, she said, "I’m going to Disney World!"
The day we surprised her, the Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary was putting the finishing touches on this year’s charity purse auction. Andrews said, "I just think they’re just all wonderful and I don’t deserve anything, so but thank you all so much."
It just happened to be her birthday, too.
Daughter Holly Busch dropped by to wish her Mom a happy birthday. Busch said, "She does so much. She does so much for Salvation Army, she’s, you know, a mother slash grandmother of two teenagers, she just does more than I could ever, more than I could ever begin to say." Busch added, "She’s a wonderful lady, I’m very proud to call her mom."
Major Theresa Newsome said Andrews acts as the glue that holds the senior program together. In addition to organizing parties at the senior high-rises, she fills the stockings for the Angel Tree seniors. She said, "They know her by name and they know that they’re going to be treated like kings and queens when she comes."
Andrews considers the Salvation Army a second career. Andrews said, "I retired, and I knew the Lord wasn’t finished with me, and, uh, boy he wasn’t. And so anyway. And I’ve put in more hours than I did when I worked, but it’s my choice, so it’s not work when you love what you do."
But even in a room full of nothing but praise, Claudette Andrews wouldn’t take the credit. Instead she said, "I’m going to tell you, these ladies. That we all work and we’re a team. We’re a great team and without everyone it couldn’t happen. It couldn’t happen."
