Mental Health Awareness Month

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – May is Mental Health Awareness Month, bringing renewed attention to mental health challenges affecting millions of Americans.

Nearly one in five adults experiences mental illness each year. Rising stress, financial pressure, and social factors are contributing to higher levels of anxiety and depression, particularly among younger people.

At the same time, efforts to expand support are growing. The 988 crisis hotline continues to connect people in distress with immediate help, offering a direct line to trained counselors across the country.

Still, many individuals face obstacles when it comes to getting care. Cost, limited provider availability, and stigma remain common barriers.

Mental Health Awareness Month serves as a reminder of both the scale of the issue and the importance of continuing efforts to improve access, support, and understanding.

If you or someone you know is struggling, you can call or text 988 for help.
