Ministry holds annual Community Christmas

ALTON, Ga. (WDEF) — A Georgia ministry prepared a Christmas dinner and gave toys away to children, to make sure those who might usually go without, have a happy holiday.

With rows of toys stacked up, this looks more like a toy store than Providence Ministries. Rosa Guerrero is thankful her kids have their pick at presents.

“It is very exciting, because I know there is always people that it is helping for the kids to get their presents at this time and on this date,” Guerrero said.

The toy giveaway is part of the ministry’s Community Christmas. Roy Johnson, the founder and president of Providence Ministries, says this is made possible because of all of the support.

“Providence Ministries is a multifaceted ministry. We have recovery programs for men and women, as well as homeless shelters. The community supports us and with their donations and businesses and all, we are able to buy these toys,” Johnson said.

Organizers enjoy giving to the children.

“It makes their day. A lot of them wouldn’t have a Christmas without it,” Johnson said.

In addition to the toys, families enjoyed a nice meal. Residents, like Sherry May, say the food is not just on the holidays. May is glad she can eat here all year round.

“I think Roy is a great man. I think that he is the only person that I know of that opens three meals a day seven days a week. He needs a medal for it. He needs to be honored for it in this town,” May said.

While it can be a hectic day, Johnson says it’s worth it for the kids.

“It is a long day for them, but it is a happy day,” Johnson said.

Parents, like Guerrero, agree.

“These presents make them happy,” Guerrero said.

Organizers estimate 2,000 people attended the Community Christmas. The event has been going on for more than 30 years.
