Mocs Abbey Cornelius Delivers Excellence
Chattanooga-(WDEF-TV) – Mocs senior Abbey Cornelius may be the leader in the clubhouse for the SoCon player of the year award.
She’s top ten in the league in several stats, and she’s also the heart and soul of this year’s Chattanooga team.
Just how good is Abbey Cornelius?
Said head coach Katie Burrows: “You are gonna get excellence from her. No matter what.”
Wow. What can you say after that.
Said Burrows: “She’s one of our leaders. She is super dependable. That’s why she doesn’t get a whole lot of breaks. We need her on the court.”
Reporter: “Coming into the year. Did you feel like you had to do more for this team at all?”
Said Cornelius:”I never really felt any pressure. I just knew I did need to step up some just with what we lost last year.”
Cornelius has certainly stepped up this season. She’s nearly averaging a double-double. 13 points and 9.7 rebounds a game.
Said Burrows: “Yeah we had conversations like hey, we are going to need you to do these things. Be nice if you could get this many points a game. This many rebounds or whatever. Well we didn’t sit down and go, you need to get six blocks a game. But she did that last game, so you know hey.”
Hey. Cornelius had 17 points and 16 boards against Western Carolina last week.
Reporter: “How aggressive do you have to be to get 16 rebounds in a game?”
Said Cornelius: “Pretty aggressive. They crashed really hard. Like credit to their offensive rebounding. So just finding the person to box out and go up and snatching it because hands are flying in from everywhere. Yeah. It gets pretty physical in the SoCon.”
Said Burrows: “She’s tough mentally. She’s tough physically.”
Add tough in the classroom. Cornelius has won just about every SoCon and UTC academic honor available.
Said Cornelius: “Just how I was raised. I had two older sisters who were both very smart. So I was kind of expected to follow in those shoes. Just student-athlete. The student comes first, so I have always just put my academics first.”
