Mocs Add Eastern Michigan Transfer QB Preston Hutchinson
(gomocs.com) CHATTANOOGA—The Chattanooga Mocs placed a priority on a premium position after the 2021 season concluded. Coach Rusty Wright and staff knew they needed to add veteran and high school signees to the quarterback room. They did the first half of that equation during the December signing period, and the other comes in the person of Eastern Michigan transfer Preston Hutchinson.
Hutchinson threw for 2,286 yards and ran for another 235 in 22 appearances including nine starts. He had 27 touchdowns with 16 from his ample arm and another 11 on the ground.
“It was important to add competition at that position,” Wright explained. “We wanted to get an experienced guy in to compete as well as a younger guy for the future. We’re pleased we accomplished that with this class.”
His best season was 2020 starting six games during the COVID-truncated campaign. The numbers were impressive with 1,662 yards by air and 206 via the ground. He threw for 12 touchdowns and added eight more rushing. His 311.3 yards per game of total offense jumps off the page. The last time a Mocs QB averaged 300 yards of total offense in a season? Chris Sanders in 2000 (341.5).
Hutchinson had three 300-yard games in his nine starts and five with multiple TD passes. There were seven games, including all six in 2020, with multiple total scores. He had highs of four TD passes against Toledo and four combined – rushing & throwing – four times including a three rushing TD day at Ball State recording a career-best 118 yards on the ground. He topped 350 yards of total offense in three of his starts.
Hutchinson is one of three newcomers to the quarterback room. One more addition was made with Indiana Wesleyan freshman transfer Parker Brown joining the ranks as well this spring. Early signee Luke Schomburg comes to town in August.
The complete signing class is unveiled starting with next Wednesday’s (Feb. 2) National Signing Day.
