( The Chattanooga Mocs softball team beat Western Carolina 11-3 in the opening day of the Southern Conference Championship in Greensboro, N.C. Freshman Amanda Beltran led the squad with six RBI, a single-game SoCon Tournament record.

“I’m so proud of this team,” head coach Frank Reed stated. “We just continue to fight. We hit the ball well. We pitched it well. It was a great way to start the tournament. I can’t say enough about this team.”

Chattanooga boasted 14 hits compared to the Catamounts seven.

Western Carolina got on the board with a run batted in by Courtney Price in the bottom of the first.

UTC had a strong offensive performance in the third having 12 at bats. All five seniors posted a hit and scored a run in this frame.

“You have to be really proud of these seniors,” explained Reed. “They really stepped up.”

Senior Amanda Ross started it off with a double, while seniors Sam Taylor and Alyssa Taylor followed with singles. Then, senior Criket Blanco doubled with the bases loaded, bringing three home.

Sophomore Ashley Conner blasted a two-run homer to increase the Mocs lead to 5-1. Senior Anyssa Robles was the final veteran to record a hit in this inning, singling up the middle. She was then batted in by Beltran.
