Mocs Counting On Their Defense to Help Make For a Great Season

Chattanooga, TN (WDEF) – Wofford lived up to their three-point shooting reputation Thursday night against Chattanooga hitting 10 of 19 behind the arc.

But many of those three’s came after the Terriers fell behind by double digits thanks to a stingy Mocs defense.

When the Mocs fell behind 22-11 in the first half, they kicked it into gear on defense, outscoring Wofford 25-5 to end the half. That put UTC up 36-27 at the break.

Said head coach Matt McCall:”Very proud of our defense especially in the first half. To hold Wofford to 27-opints.”

Said forward Tre’ McLean:”We can be really good. One of the best defensive teams in the country I believe. I think at the rate we’re going. If the guys stay bought in and keep working hard, I think we can be really, really good with the length and athleticism we have and the ability to guard multiple positions.”

Said forward Makinde London:”We have all the length and athleticism we have on the court. As long as we are locked in and focused, I think we could run chicken pox and we could be all right you know.”

Coach McCall wouldn’t mind if defense became as contagious as the chicken pox.

Said McCall:”This team is at their best when we can get stops and get out on the break. If we can get stops and get out on the fast break that settles you in offensively.”

In the second half Wofford cut the Mocs lead to 51-46. That’s when senior Casey Jones scored five straight points to extend Chattanooga’s advantage.

Said Wofford head coach Mike Young:”That son-of-a-gun. We haven’t been able to guard him in five years. (laughter) We couldn’t guard him last year and bless his heart, he had a terrible ankle. And it’s nice to see him back. It’s nice to see him competing and helping their team in such a special way. He has been a great player around here.”
