Mocs Don’t Expect Drop-Off at Defensive Line Despite Graduation of Talented Players

Chattanooga-(WDEF) The Mocs graduated two big time stars off the defensive line last year in Vantrell McMillan and Keionta Davis. Those two together combined for 18 sacks last year.
And yet, UTC believes the D-line will remain a position of strength this season.
Even though UTC lost some talent on the defensive line from last year, no one is forecasting a drop-off in production this season.
Said lineman Taylor Reynolds:”Losing Keionta and Vantrell. They were great players, but we’re just trying to keep it going.”
Added lineman Isaiah Mack:”It has been a long time coming. Being behind KD, he taught me a lot. So I’m just trying to be the next big thing.”
Said head coach Tom Arth:”We feel like the defensive line is certainly a strength among our defense and among our team. We have a lot of guys that play at a high level that are all very versatile.”
The Mocs have led the Southern Conference in sacks the last three seasons.
Said Mack:”Our defensive line is huge on sacks. We believe in it. We crave to it. We believe in sacks. We believe the more sacks we get, the better our team gets.”
Said Arth:”In order to be a great team, you’ve got to be dominant on defense. Dominance on defense starts with the defensive line. I think we are positioned well with that group in terms of our depth and our versatility up-front.”
UTC is switching to a 3-4 alignment this season, and the players welcome the change.
Said Reynolds:”We love it. I’ve kind of moved outside. Playing it head-up on the tackle. It has give me a little bit more room to rush the passer, so I love it.”
Said Mack:”It’s a whole lot different than being inside when you are so used to tight spaces. I kind of like being out. I’ve got a whole lot more space, so I can make a whole lot more plays.”
The defense has been getting after the Mocs quarterbacks in practice, and Coach Arth is loving it.
Said Arth:”Just going to help our quarterbacks speed up their entire process. Make quick decisions. Get the ball out on time. Anticipate open receivers.”
