Mocs Fall to Belmont 5-2
(GOMOCS.COM) The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s tennis team dropped a 5-2 match to Belmont at the Strang-Voges Tennis Center this afternoon. The Mocs won two singles in the dual but fell to 0-4 in spring action. Belmont won its third-straight match to improve to 3-1 with the win.
Freshman Niklas Gerdes led UTC with a big win at No. 1. He defeated Belmont senior Cedric Dejacquier (6-3, 6-4) in straight sets for his first collegiate win. Gerdes, who joined the team at the beginning of the semester, was 0-3 at No. 2 coming into today. He moved into the top spot to post a victory over Dejacquicer, who was a first team All-OVC pick last season.
Freshman Simon Bustamante also scored for the Mocs today. He defeated Zak Khan in three sets (4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (9)) at No. 4.
“Today was a test for our guys,” stated UTC head coach Carlos Garcia. “I knew going in we were going to have to respond well after playing late last night. It showed in the doubles, but I did feel like we worked our way into the match in the singles>
“We gained more confidence as we stayed on the court and I was excited to see Niklas win at No. 1. That is not easy for a freshman to do. Simon also had a great weekend and it is something to build on.”
Next up for the Mocs is a Friday night match at the Racquet Club in Hixson against Tennessee Tech. First serve is set for 6:00 p.m. (E.S.T.) and live scoring is again available on GoMocs.com.
