Mocs Hold Nation’s Top Scoring Team to 73 Points in Double Digit Victory Over the Citadel

(gomocs.com) CHATTANOOGA—Johnathan Burroughs-Cook’s season-high 20 points led four in double figures in an 83-73 Southern Conference win over The Citadel. Thirteen of the 20 came in the second half.

Burroughs-Cook was joined in double digits by Casey Jones, who tallied a season-best 17. Justin Tuoyo had a double-double with 13 points and a career-high-tying 13 boards, while Tre’ McLean added 12 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Zane Najdawi paced the Bulldogs with 15 points and five rebounds. Frankie Johnson chipped in 13 with Leandro Allende and Warren Sledge posting 12 and 10, respectively.

It was a see-saw battle for the first 33 minutes. A Najdawi triple at 6:45 cut the Bulldogs’ deficit to eight points, 66-58. Tuoyo scored on four of the next five possessions for a 9-1 run to extend the margin to 75-59 with 4:06 to go. The lead reached 17, 83-68, on two Greg Pryor free throws before a flurry of points in the final 1:30 got the Bulldogs within 10 at the final buzzer.

The Mocs held the nation’s top scoring team more than 24 points shy of its 97.2 scoring average. It was just the sixth time The Citadel has been limited to less than 75 in a game.

Tuoyo reached the 500 mark in career rebounds with his 13th of the night. That puts him at No. 12 in UTC’s DI era career rebounding list. He also blocked four shots to get to within seven of 250 in his career.

“I feel like, early on, we had to get down and play tough. They threw a couple of traps at us and we were kind of rattled, but then we started getting it together and started breaking in and getting easy layups at the rim.” – Senior guard Johnathan Burroughs-Cook.
