Mocs Not Basking in the Glow of New Top 25 Ranking
After going 3-8 last season, the Mocs are now 4-0 this season, which is currently the best record in the Southern Conference. UTC is also sneaking into the national spotlight earning a top twenty ranking this week.
It’s always better to be ranked than unranked, but the Mocs are not hanging their hat on making this week’s Top 25 poll.
Said head coach Tom Arth:”You know being ranked really doesn’t mean a whole lot. I mean we weren’t ranked the first four weeks, and we are 4-0. We just beat a team that was ranked. So the ranking didn’t help them.”
Said receiver Bingo Morton:”It feels good. I mean we just can’t get comfortable because it’s still a long season ahead of us, and we still have all of our goals ahead of us as well.”
Arth:”Seasons are not defined in September. Seasons are defined in October and November and beyond.”
Coach Arth believes his team has the right mind set to handle any extra attention that comes with winning and rankings.
Said Arth:”They see the articles and all that stuff. I think they know that while we have played well, I think everybody has great confidence in our group and in our team team and feels that we are a good football team.”
Said defensive back C.J. Fritz:”Like Bingo said we are just going 1-0 each week, so we have to continue to get better each week and every day in practice.”
Getting to 4-0 hasn’t been easy. The Mocs held off Samford at the gun, and they had to go to overtime to beat the Citadel.
Said Arth:”I think it says a lot about the resiliency of our football team. I think good football teams. The ones that I have been around. They find different ways to win. Not every game is pretty. Not every game is an easy win, but you have to find ways to win.”
The Mocs will try to find a way to win at ETSU on Saturday night at 7:30.
