Mocs Softball Splits First Two Games of Frost Classic

CHATTANOOGA – The Chattanooga Mocs’ softball team split day one of the Frost Classic at Frost Stadium on Friday afternoon with a 4-0 win over Southern Illinois before dropping the second contest, 6-1 to Northern Illinois.

UTC moves to 6-6 this season, while Southern Illinois dropped to 4-5 and Northern Illinois improved to 2-3.

The Mocs are scheduled to return to Frost Stadium tomorrow for two more contests. The first UTC game is slated for 12:30 p.m. vs. Butler.

GAME 1 RECAP
Both pitchers allowed just one hit through the second inning and then the Mocs entered the run column in the third with an RBI double off the bat of Presley Williamson, scoring Liz Rodebaugh. Two pitches later, Acelynn Sellers singled through the right side to double the Mocs’ lead.

In the fourth, the Blue and Gold tacked on two more with an Emily Coltharp single to center and a Liz Rodebaugh sacrifice fly to short.

Williamson led the contingent with a 2-for-3 day and an RBI. Coltharp, Rodebaugh and Sellers also drove in runs for the Mocs.

Brooke Parrott continued her success in the circle with another complete game shutout. The reigning Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week allowed no runs on four hits with three strikeouts to earn her team-leading fourth win of the season.

GAME 2 RECAP
Chattanooga got on the board first with a Gracey Kruse single up the middle.

Northern Illinois plated three runs in the third, two unearned to take its first lead of the game and the Huskies never gave it up. The visitors added two in the fifth and one in the top of the seventh to complete their 6-1 win.

Izzy Alley got the start for the Mocs and allowed five runs, three earned on four hits in five innings of work. She fanned four batters and walked one.

Reagan Lowrie came in relief and allowed one run and two hits with two K’s in two innings of work.

Offensively, Kruse and Snell logged hits for the Mocs. Kruse picked up two hits for her third multi-hit game of the season and the 13th in her career.

NIU’s Delaney Ostrowski went six innings and allowed one run on three hits with one strikeout en route to her first win of the season. The Huskies’ leadoff hitter, Kara Apato went 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored three times.
