Mocs Upset Win Over Samford “Pure Joy”
Chattanooga-(WDEF) Chattanooga had only one victory all season, but on Saturday they pulled off one of the biggest upsets in school history.
The Mocs beat 8th ranked Samford to notch the team’s first road win over a top ten opponent in 34 years.
Watching Victor Ulmo knock home the game winning field goal with 19 seconds left to upset a top ten team on the road, victories don’t get much sweeter than that.
Said head coach Tom Arth:”Probably top three moments for me in my coaching career in terms of the feeling and excitement that I had those last 20 seconds and coming off the field. Just the pure joy. Nobody was holding back.”
Said defensive lineman Taylor Reynolds:”I was just excited for our team our coaches. We’ve been really pushing and working to try to get that win.”
Chattanooga did not grab a turnover in their previous four games, and yet they got seven turnovers against Samford, including a pick by defensive lineman Taylor Reynolds, and check out the way he carried the ball.
Said Arth:”Yeah he looked a little bit like Deion Sanders.”
Said Reynolds:”I tucked the ball late. Receiver came and tackled me. I wasn’t that stupid. I was just trying to get as many yards as I could. I think I got like seven, which I’ll take.” (Laughs)
Freshman quarterback Cole Copeland had two picks against Samford, but he engineered the drive that led to the game winning kick.
Said Arth:”The one thing about Cole is he always comes back. He has always shown that resiliency and that ability to kind of find a way.”
Mocs can’t get too caught up in their Samford win because they face another top ten team this week in Wofford.
Said Arth:”We’ve won two games. We’ve won two games out of seven. So I don’t know how much swagger we can walk around with.”
