Mocs Use Big First Half Run To Help Seal Win Over Wofford
(GoMocs.com) CHATTANOOGA—The Chattanooga Mocs started slow, ran out to a big lead and withstood a late 3pt barrage in a 77-66 win over visiting Wofford Thursday night. Tre’ McLean’s 23-point effort led four in double figures for the Mocs.
McLean scored eight points in a 12-0 run that flipped a 22-11 deficit into a 23-22 lead. UTC held the Terriers scoreless for nearly five minutes when Ryan Sawvell ended the drought with two free throws at 4:06 of the first half.
That did not stop the Mocs onslaught. Justin Tuoyo’s follow of a Rodney Chatman miss put the home team up for good. They closed the final nine minutes with a 25-5 spurt in total for a 36-27 halftime advantage allowing the Terriers a lone 3pt basket over the dominating stretch.
The lead reached 12 early in the second half, but the visitors did not go quietly. Back-to-back three pointers from Fletcher Magee and Nathan Hoover made it a five-point affair, 51-46, with 10:33 to go. There was no blinking on the other end.
McLean started a 13-0 run capped by Johnathan Burroughs-Cook’s free throw with 6:34 remaining for a 64-46 advantage. The 18-point lead was the largest of the night. Wofford hit its final four three-pointers to finish the night 10-for-19 (52.6%) and get within 11 at the final horn.
McLean added five rebounds three assists and two steals to his stat line. Tuoyo posted 17 points, five rebounds and two blocks, while Casey Jones came off the bench for 14 points and a team-high six boards. Makinde London had 12 points and five rebounds.
Sawvell’s 14 points and six rebounds led the visitors. Magee and Eric Garcia added 10 apiece.
