More to the Story with Staley: Kids Helping Kids
ROSSVILLE, Ga. (WDEF) — There are children in the United States that go hungry each and every day. There are many people and organizations that do their best to help alleviate that problem. One school in North Georgia is now joining the fight.
It’s a program that started many years ago. Trion, Georgia was actually ground zero.
And now, Cloud Springs Elementary in Rossville is fully on board. Joining many other schools in North Georgia.
It’s in partnership with two non-profits: Communities in Schools and Helping Hands Ending Hunger.
And it’s exactly what the name says it is: kids helping kids.
“I thought it was a great idea. I’d seen on Facebook where kids could donate their leftover food. Because we always have hungry students,” said Principal Lori Welborn.
During the lunch hour, the kids are welcome to donate their individually wrapped, leftover food. Milk, juice, an apple, food of that nature.
In the bin it goes, ready for a child who needs to eat.
“It is student led. Kids helping kids. They donate that apple that they didn’t eat. And they know it’s going to someone who needs the food,” said Communities for Schools Coordinator Kim Davis.
After the kids donate, the grownups and administrators then go to work. Collecting it all, storing the food, prepping it for pickup or delivery once a week.
Welborn says it’s all because these “K-through-5” kids have big hearts.
“The kids are excited. The kids will ask me what they can donate,” Welborn said. “Our goal is for them to eat anything and everything they want. But if anything is left over, we want the kids to donate that.”
The program will run all year long. Welborn says she sees no reason it can’t be a yearly thing. Because there is always the need.
