National Gun Rights group slams Tennessee Special Session
The National Association for Gun Rights wants lawmakers to immediately adjourn the session once it is called.
LOVELAND, Colorado (WDEF) – A national gun rights organization is slamming Governor Lee’s call for a special session on public safety in Tennessee.
The governor is calling lawmakers back in session on August 21 to consider new legislation to address events like the Covenant School shooting in Nashville earlier this year.
The National Association for Gun Rights wants the legislature to censure the governor for calling the session and then immediately adjourn.
The group believes the special session has been called to pass new gun restrictions in the state.
“It is clear that Governor Bill Lee is blatantly flaunting his power to call a special session while ignoring his constituents and the voices of those they chose to represent them,” said Dudley Brown, National Association for Gun Rights President. “Elected Republicans at all levels of the state openly oppose this special session on Biden-backed gun control, and Lee’s executive order is not in line with the values of the Second Amendment or United States Constitution.”
Though he has not specifically called for any new gun laws, others are advocating for them in response to the school shooting.
Here is the group’s take on the measures Governor Lee is supporting:

Here is the group’s take on what the governor is supporting:
Lee’s order includes:
- A carefully worded scheme that would effectively create a “Red Flag” Gun Confiscation law in Tennessee.
- A call for so-called “safe storage” legislation that would leave gun owners and their families defenseless in their own homes.
- A Universal Gun Registration scheme that would create a government list of every firearm you own, opening the door for future firearms confiscations and making it illegal to sell a firearm to a friend.
“Governor Lee should rescind his order for a special session, and if he does not, Tennessee’s elected Representatives and Senators should censure the Governor for his assault on the Second Amendment and adjourn the special session with no action on Lee’s firearms proposals,” concluded Brown.
