National Night Out in The City of Chattanooga

CHATTANOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)- National Night Out was held all over the city in places like East Lake Park, Lake Hills Park, Downtown Saint Elmo, and the Murray Hills Walking Track.

According to officials this is only Chattanooga’s second year hosting the national event, and even in that short amount of time, attendance has more than tripled.

It’s National Night Out in the city of Chattanooga.

Linda Richards | East Lake Neighborhood Association Secretary
“It’s an event that we celebrate, trying to get everyone–kinda like a block party, and we want people to be able to come together, get to know your neighbors, and recognize that crime is out there, but that doesn’t mean that we have to succumb to it.”

The event was organized by community members like Linda Richards, in partnership with the Chattanooga Police Department, to build stronger bonds between community members and local police officers.

Linda Richards | East Lake Neighborhood Association Secretary
“It takes both parties doing their part. It takes both sides. Us as citizens, and the police department as the agent of justice.”

Chief Fred Fletcher | Chattanooga Police Department
“A community that knows each other, works together, and is out active on their porches and their yards and in their streets, making sure that they work together to solve the problems that matter to all of us.”

The national event is still relatively new to our city, but organizers say it’s already growing in popularity

Linda Richards | East Lake Neighborhood Association Secretary
“When I started doing National Night Out, we had about six, maybe seven, people to attend, since that time it has evolved into what 3, 4, 500 people to come out.”

Chief Fred Fletcher | Chattanooga Police Department
“The crowd is bigger here then it was at an event like this two years ago, people engaging each other and their public servants more than they did, and together we’re able to identify problems, create solutions and move forward together.”
