New Dalton superintendent explains goals for district

DALTON, Ga. (WDEF) — As school safety is on the minds of administrators across the country, the new leader of Dalton Public Schools explains his vision for the district.

The nine different Dalton Public Schools have a new person in  charge. Superintendent Dr. Tim Scott joined the district this week. He comes from the Douglas County School system where he moved up the ranks. Doctor Scott says he’s glad to be here.

“Dalton Public Schools has such a great tradition educating children. They have a community that really supports a school system,” said Dr. Scott.

Dr. Scott wants to continue student success.

“we can always do better and we are going to continually work to improve student achievement and student success,” Dr. Scott said.

With recent events, including the situation at Dalton High School where a teacher is accused of shooting a gun through his classroom window, school safety is at the forefront.

“Probably ten or fifteen years ago, I would have said instruction is the most important thing we do, with the changes in our world and the things that have happened, safety is very, very important,” Dr. Scott said.

Dr. Scott says parents expect him to send their children home safely.

“We want to work not only look at just the facets of providing a safe school, but also providing opportunities for students and adults to help with anything that may cause them to feel that anxiety or the stress that they may have,” Dr. Scott said.

He is looking forward to being in this community.

“I’m excited to be part of the Dalton School system and this is a great place,” Dr. Scott said.
