New Renderings and Update Given on South Broad Stadium
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)- The master developer for the South Broad Stadium unveiled new renderings today.
In front of a packed Chattanooga City Council planning meeting, Jim Irwin presented the new renderings of the South Broad Stadium.
The renderings show what the stadium would look like as the existing Tennessee Riverwalk, Wheland Foundry, and U-S Pipe Buildings become an integral part of it.
Irwin said, “That’s one thing we are really committed to doing, not just building an island of concrete and a sea of asphalt. Instead it becomes a walkable, bikeable, year round venue for the entire city.”
Some of the features include the powerhouse of the foundry being an restaurant/bar concept, the paint shop being used as an entrance into the stadium, and the Riverwalk forming a third of a mile loop around the stadium.
At the moment, the project is its schematic design phase, as EMJ construction, who was approved last week by the City Council, is beginning its work towards groundbreaking.
Irwin said, “EMJ will then take those drawings and then spend the next month or two to price out things. So it will take them about five weeks to fully price out those drawings.”
In order for groundbreaking to begin at South Broad Stadium, all this concreteon site will have to be dug up.
It will create a pit about 20 feet deep that a field can be put in and the Tennessee Riverwalk will encircle its perimeter.
That groundbreaking date is far from being set as the city council has to approve a construction plan before work can begin.
Irwin also added that the final cost of the project is unknown at this time and won’t be known until the plan is finalized.
He said, “The intent is to begin earthwork as soon as we possibly can, just because of the amount of time that it takes.”
Irwin said that capacity is not finalized but will likely be around 5,000 seats, with the ability to expand up to 10,000 for select events such as concerts.
He says to expect more updates by the end of August in September.
