News 12 Then: Taking you back to the first Riverbend Festival

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – Were you there for the first Riverbend in 1982?

That first year, organizers didn’t know what kind of crowds they would draw.

They were happy with the 15,000 who showed up (which is just a fraction of a typical Friday night show now).

It started with a barge pulled up to Ross’s Landing and a lot of folding chairs in the parking area.

In later years, the Riverfront evolved to become more visitor friendly, in part to host the ongoing summer festival.

So who played that first year?

Take a look at our wrapup from August of 1982. (yes, Riverbend originally started in August before organizers realized it was just too hot then)
