News 12 Then: Teaching Girls in 1992

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – Have gender issues in schools changed much over the last 25 years?

In 1992, Education reporter Chris Allen took a look at a new study that found teachers treat female students differently than males.

And girls entering the Middle School years had major confidence issues in class.

So have things changed much over the last 25 years?

Modern research has found many of the same issues.. teachers tend to interrupt girls more and tend to give males more of a break for “boys being boys.”

But educators these days are fighting two trends.

The education system is struggling to keep female students interested in STEM courses (math, science, computers).

But they are also worried that the school achievement gap is growing.

Girls are learning more in school and going on to college at greater rates than boys.
