NHL DFS: DraftKings, FanDuel daily fantasy hockey top picks for March 16

Every team in the NHL has played at least 70 games now in the 2018-19 season and the final dozen or so games to the finish will be a mad dash with several spots in the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs hanging in the balance. On Saturday, a heavyweight showdown between the two first-place teams in the East should attract plenty of attention for NHL DFS players with the over-under total at seven for Lightning vs. Capitals. Alex Ovechkin and Andrei Vasilevskiy will be undoubtedly popular options in NHL DFS tournaments and cash games on FanDuel and DraftKings because of that total. But before you set your NHL DFS lineups, be sure to check out the NHL DFS picks and advice for Saturday night from DFS millionaire Mike McClure.

McClure is also a predictive data engineer at SportsLine who uses a powerful prediction model that simulates every minute of every game 10,000 times, taking factors like matchups, statistical trends and injuries into account. This allows him to find the best NHL DFS values and create optimal lineups that he shares only over at SportsLine. They’re a must-see for any NHL DFS player.

On Friday, McClure was all over Flyers wing James van Riemsdyk at $5,300 on FanDuel. The result: Van Riemsdyk netted a hat trick against the Maple Leafs — returning over 47 points and almost 9x value. Anyone who rostered him was well on their way to a winning night.

For Saturday, we can tell you McClure is high on Lightning wing Nikita Kucherov at $9,400 on FanDuel and $7,600 on DraftKings.

Kucherov is coming off another monster performance on Thursday night, depositing a couple of goals and dishing out two assists in a win over the Red Wings. He’s up to a staggering 115 points now in 71 games and is running away with the Art Ross Trophy that goes to the NHL point leader each season. He’s also the favorite to win the Hart Memorial Trophy as MVP.

While that won’t earn you any points in NHL DFS on Saturday, his penchant for finding the back of the net against the Capitals should come in handy. He’s got eight goals against them in 13 career regular-season games and you’ll want to ride the hot hand of the most dynamic player in the league in a premium matchup.

McClure is also high on Maple Leafs wing Andreas Johnsson ($4,500 on FanDuel, $4,500 on DraftKings), who has four points in his last three games.

The 24-year-old Swede continues to enjoy a surprising rookie season, with 20 goals and 40 total points in 64 games. He’s consistently earning 15 minutes or more of ice time a night and he’s using that time to help the Maple Leafs dominate the puck and get shots on net. Johnsson and Toronto get Ottawa on Saturday night and that’s a prime matchup. The Senators are last in the NHL in goals against and Johnsson had a goal against them the last time they played.

McClure is also targeting an undervalued player who is set to explode for huge numbers on Saturday. He’s a huge steal at his price point, so this pick could be the difference between cashing and going home with nothing. You absolutely need to see who it is before setting your lineups.
