Nonprofit to partner with state prison to help lower recidivism
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – A local non-profit that helps people re-enter society from prison says they have formed a partnership with one of the world’s largest private prison corporations.
The BRAVE Effect was founded by Joe Jenkins, who himself was incarcerated but has become an advocate for prisoner rights.
They will be working with CoreCivic, who operates the Trousdale Turner Correctional Center in Hartsville, Tennessee, to provide services for inmates who are released.
These services include counseling, tech literacy courses, mentoring, and access to other basic needs in their re-entry.
Jenkins said, “Would you put in a location in your navigation system and turn your phone face down? I don’t think so. What happens is when we don’t have a plan that we can look at, it’s like only hearing your navigation system in your car versus being able to see where you’re going. We want people to be able to see where they’re going. We want to see what’s ahead. We want people to see when they’re going to make the wrong move or when they’re in the wrong environments.”
