Nonprofit Expands Into Hamilton County Schools to Support Students

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) Sometimes, challenges at home can make it hard for students to focus in school. To address this, Communities In Schools of Tennessee has expanded into Hamilton County, placing staff directly inside schools to support students who may be struggling.

Marques Stewart, Superintendent of the MissiImg 5666onary Ridge Learning Community, says the partnership has been a major boost for local schools.
“Last year I was so excited—it felt like Christmas,” Stewart said. “As a former principal, I knew how impactful this partnership would be for our schools. Just having it here made it even more exciting.”

The organization is now serving several schools in the area, including East Ridge Elementary, East Ridge Middle, East Ridge High School, Spring Creek Elementary, and Central High School.

Meredith Benton, CEO of Communities In Schools of Tennessee, explains how their staff connects with students and families.
“Because our staff are official district employees, they can build relationships with students and families in a way where they feel comfortable sharing what’s really happening,” Benton said. “Often we see the symptoms of a problem, and our staff are able to get to the underlying root of what’s happening and support the family.”

School leaders say having these services on campus helps create a stronger support system, both inside and outside the classroom, giving students the tools and resources they need to succeed.
