November 30th Home Date With UConn Highlights Schedule For UTC Women’s Basketball Team
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — The 2015-16 University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s basketball schedule features three Top 25 teams, including a visit from the national champions, a pair of tournaments and a 14-game Southern Conference slate.
UConn, the reigning National Champions, will make it’s first-ever visit to Chattanooga to take on the Mocs on Monday, November 30. The Huskies’ head coach Geno Auriemma began his career as an assistant to Chattanooga head coach Jim Foster when the pair resided in Philadelphia. The Huskies have won 10 NCAA titles including five in the last seven years and two runner-up finishes.
This will be the second time UTC will host a reigning national champion. The Mocs hosted Tennessee after the Lady Vols won the 2008 NCAA title under former head coach Pat Summit.
Chattanooga’s schedule also features return games with Tennessee on November 23 in Knoxville and a cross-country trip to Stanford, Calif., to take on the Cardinal on December 28. Last season, the Mocs snared victories from both teams as Top 10 foes, earning UTC a spot in the Top 25 polls.
The season will open for the Mocs against McNeese State in the preseason WNIT. UTC will host the Cowgirls’ in its fourth preseason appearance. Each team is guaranteed three games in the event and a win would pit the Mocs’ against either Indiana or Tennessee State in the second round.
Just before Christmas, Chattanooga will head to the coast to participate in the UNC Wilmington Christmas Classic. The Mocs will take on East Carolina on December 18 with a matchup against the host Seahawks the following day.
The remainder of the non-conference slate is highlighted by home contests against Butler (Nov. 15), Arkansas State (Nov. 25), UT Martin (Nov. 28), Belmont (Dec. 16) and Harvard on January 4. The Mocs will travel to South Florida on December 13.
The Southern Conference portion of the schedule tips off on January 7 on the road at Wofford and then Furman two days later. UTC returns home to host Western Carolina on January 14 in the first of six doubleheaders on the year. UNCG will visit on Saturday, January 6.
The Mocs’ next three games will be on the road at Mercer (Jan. 21), Samford (Jan. 23) and ETSU (Jan. 30). Furman and Wofford will visit on February 4 and 6 in doubleheaders with the men’s team. Chattanooga will close out the road portion of the slate at UNCG on February 11 and Western Carolina two days later.
The regular season will wrap up at home against Samford on February 17 and Mercer on February 20 with East Tennessee State visiting in the season finale on February 27.
The Mocs will head to Asheville, N.C., for the Southern Conference Tournament beginning Friday, March 4 and running through Monday, March 7. The first round will be held at Kimmel Arena on the UNC Asheville campus with the semifinals and final being held at the U.S. Cellular Center.
