Officers suffer injuries in fight with a drug suspect in western North Carolina
MURPHY, North Carolina (WDEF) – A drug arrest in the North Carolina mountains involved a police chase and fight that injured several deputies.
Cherokee County Sheriff Derrick Palmer described the incident from Tuesday afternoon.
He says one of his narcotics detectives noticed a vehicle being driven suspiciously in the Culberson Community.
When he tried to stop it, the vehicle fled.
Other officers joined the high speed chase.
Eventually they boxed the vehicle in.
The sheriff says a passenger, 39 year old Brian Matthew Bailey from Mineral Bluff, Georgia, then hopped out and began fighting detectives.
He says that “they sustained serious injuries.”
Once they got him into custody, officers say they found a substantial amount of meth on him.
The driver, 32 year old Cynthia Lynn Smith of Blue Ridge, was taken into custody without incident.
A search of the vehicle turned up a sizable amount of suspected heroin.
Bailey faces drug charges plus Assault of an Officer Inflicting Serious Injury.
Smith faces drug charges plus fleeing police.
Sheriff Palmer stated “Again good work by our team in locating and getting more illegal drugs out of our community. You can see the lengths individuals are going to evade capture. I think that it speaks well of our officers that although they received serious injuries while arresting Bailey they were able to accomplish the arrest using the least amount of force necessary.”
