OFFICIAL: Mocs’ Lamont Paris new men’s basketball coach at South Carolina

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — The deal is finally done. The Southern Conference’s Coach of the Year and leader of Chattanooga men’s basketball for the last five is officially the new coach at the University of South Carolina.

According to reports, Paris signed a five-year deal worth $2.2 million in the first year. He was making $250,000 at UTC.

Paris led the Mocs back to winning, amassing a 65-28 (.699) record since the start of the 2019-20 season. This year, the Mocs finished 27-8, winning the SoCon regular season and tournament title. Paris’ last game as the Mocs head coach came in Pittsburgh in the one-point loss to Illinois in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

UTC released the following statement about the hire:

“We congratulate Lamont on this move. He built our program into a consistent winner again, and we appreciate those effort. He will be missed in Chattanooga, but we look forward to challenge ahead and immediately begin our nationwide search,” said Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Mark Wharton.

“Our program’s history and future will draw another talented coach to our program which has seen three of the last four win SoCon Championships and take it to the NCAA Tournament.”
