Ooltewah group provides kids school supplies

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – The Samaritan Center in Ooltewah kicked-off its “Stock the Lockers” program this afternoon with entertainment and special guests.

“Stock The Lockers” enables children, primarily in eastern Hamilton County, to start their school year off right with a backpack full of new school supplies.

Members of the community collected the new backpacks with pencils and other school supplies, and donated them to the Samaritan Center who then distributes the supplies to families who request help or who are referred by area teachers.

Students can come to the Center and select their own schools supplies.

Erica Hughes, case manager at the Samaritan Center says the Center is key to helping kids get a successful back to school start.

” I am very thankful to have this program; to be able to help the community. Because it makes a difference. School is coming up and with the stress of having to provide school clothing, school supplies; we make it easy for the parents. And we make it easy for the teachers to do their job as well.”

The Kids on the Block puppet team was on hand this afternoon to perform for the kids who attend the Stock the Lockers event.
