Overnight storms leave thousands without power in north central Alabama

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) – Alabama Power officials say more than 8,000 customers were without power after storms rolled through the state.

The utility company said before dawn Wednesday that about 8,200 customers statewide were without power, with about 4,400 of them in the metro Birmingham area. Another 1,600 customers were in Tuscaloosa; 1,100 more were in Anniston; and there another 700 in the Eufaula area.

The storms that moved across Alabama late Tuesday are part of the same system that left at least three people dead in Louisiana and Mississippi.

In west Alabama, Pickens County emergency management director Ken Gibson said a storm knocked down trees and damaged at least one home near Reform. No one was hurt.

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley had issued a state of emergency as the severe weather approached the state.
